From Colombia to Leading in Tech: My Journey of Resilience
and Growth
-
Growing up in Colombia during the 80s and 90s was shaped
by uncertainty and resilience.
Violence was part of daily life, but so was hope and a
drive to build something better.
That drive carried me forward when I moved to the U.S. in
2000, chasing safety and opportunity.
-
The turning points in my journey
-
Breaking into tech as an outsider, navigating new
systems and cultural barriers.
-
Transitioning from contributor to leader, where I
discovered my passion for empowering teams.
-
Facing my biggest challenge: rebuilding trust and
alignment within a struggling project team.
-
Vulnerability as a strength
-
At one point, I burned out, pushing too hard to "prove"
myself. It wasn’t sustainable.
Vulnerability taught me to redefine success—not by endless
productivity but by meaningful connections and outcomes.
-
The Lessons
-
Leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about
trust, collective ownership, and the courage to grow
through challenges. My journey from Colombia to
engineering leadership taught me that our past doesn’t
define us; it equips us.

To those navigating their own challenges: resilience and
growth often come hand in hand. What’s a lesson your
journey has taught you?
